คำประกาศของคณะกรรมการตัดสินรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียน (ซีไรต์)

ประจำปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๖๖ ประเภทรวมเรื่องสั้น

           คณะกรรมการตัดสินรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียน (ซีไรต์) ประจำปี พุทธศักราช ๒๕๖๖ พิจารณาแล้ว   มีความเห็นว่า

           รวมเรื่องสั้น Family Comes First ด้วยรักและผุพัง ของ นริศพงศ์ รักวัฒนานนท์ เล่าเรื่องคนไทยเชื้อสายจีนในมุมมองใหม่ ผู้เขียนใช้ “ความเป็นจีน” เป็นเครื่องมือในการตั้งคำถามต่อจารีตประเพณี ความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจ รวมทั้งค่านิยมบางประการ เช่น ค่านิยมผู้ชายเป็นใหญ่ มายาคติของสายเลือด ตัวละครตกอยู่ในกับดักของประเพณี ผู้หญิงถูกกดทับให้ตกอยู่ในพันธนาการของความหม่นเศร้า ประเพณีที่เคยเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของครอบครัวใหญ่ได้ล่มสลายลง สร้างบาดแผลให้แก่สมาชิกในครอบครัวและก่อให้เกิดโศกนาฏกรรม กระนั้น ในความ “ผุพัง” ก็ยังคงมีความ “ผูกพัน” ที่เป็นเครื่องยึดโยงให้อยู่ร่วมกันได้

            ผู้เขียนถ่ายทอดความเป็นจีนผ่านแนวการเล่าเรื่องที่หลากหลาย ทั้งแนวสมจริง (realism) แนวสัจนิยมมหัศจรรย์ (magical realism) และอุปมานิทัศน์ (allegory)  ซึ่งเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้อ่านตีความได้หลายนัยและขยายประสบการณ์เฉพาะทางวัฒนธรรมไปสู่ประเด็นปัญหาร่วมในสังคม การใช้ผัสสะที่เอื้อต่อการตีความ เช่น การใช้สีแดงเพื่อสื่อความหมายที่ขัดแย้งกันระหว่างสีแห่งมงคลกับสีแห่งความตาย ช่วยสื่อบรรยากาศความลึกลับ ความน่าสะพรึงกลัว ความอึดอัด นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการใช้สารนอกตัวบท (paratext) เช่น การออกแบบหน้าปกให้มีชื่อเรื่องเป็นภาษาไทย จีน อังกฤษ การใช้อักษรจีนเป็นส่วนประกอบของตัวบท ช่วยสื่อนัยของการปะทะสังสรรค์กันระหว่างรากเหง้าทางชาติพันธุ์กับความเป็นสมัยใหม่

           คณะกรรมการจึงมีมติเป็นเอกฉันท์ให้ รวมเรื่องสั้น Family Comes First ด้วยรักและผุพัง ของ นริศพงศ์ รักวัฒนานนท์ ได้รับรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียน (ซีไรต์) ประจำปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๖๖

Announcement of the Judging Committee of the Southeast Asian Writers Award (S.E.A. Write)
for the year 2023

         The Judging Committee of the Southeast Asian Writers Award unanimously agreed that the collection of short stories entitled Family Comes First, With Affection and Affliction, composed by Narisapongse Rakwattananont, is the winner of the S.E.A Write Award for the year 2023.

This collection of short stories, Family Comes First, With Affection and Affliction, by Narisapongse Rakwattananont, recounts the story of Chinese Thais from a new perspective. The author uses "Chineseness" as a tool to pose questions on traditions, power-related relationships and such values as patriarchy and myth of the blood line. The characters fall victim to the trap of traditions. Women are crushed into the bondage of melancholy. The traditions that once symbolized the prestige of large family have collapsed, inflicting wounds on family members and leading to tragedy. Yet, in the "affliction" there is still "affection," which helps keep family members together.

             The author conveys the Chinese identity through various storytelling techniques, be it realism, magical realism, and allegory. These techniques lend themselves to multiple interpretations and extend specific cultural experiences to cover contemporary social issues. Moreover, the senses are used to create meanings. The red color conveys conflicting meanings between the color of auspiciousness and the color of death. Red also conveys the atmosphere of mystery, terror, and frustration. In addition, such paratext as the design of the book cover to include the Thai, Chinese, and English languages in the title, as well as inserting the Chinese characters into certain pages, suggests the meaning of the clash between ethnic roots and modernity.

        The Judging Committee, hence, unanimously agreed that the collection of short stories entitled Family Comes First, With Affection and Affliction, written by Narisapongse Rakwattananont is most appropriate to be honored with the prestigious S.E.A Write Award for the year 2023.
